The Paris of the Danube

There are very few cities that can be described as having a grown up type magic. Many places can be described as having that fairytale-esque type aura that makes you feel as if Walt Disney's genius is lurking around the next corner. However, very few can cast the spell of adult magic and can whisk people away in a more mature fashion. Many say Paris has this ability or so I have been told by the movies. I wouldn't know because I have never been to the city of lights. But I can tell you for certain that Budapest does indeed have its own brand of enchantment. The city literally glows in a bedazzling light.

My heart kind of skips a beat when I think of Budapest. One of the three imperial cities of the Hapsburg empire, Budapest is truly a crown jewel.

The city's sense of grandeur is spellbinding without being oppressive or unapproachable. It is impossible not to be drawn to such gleaming monuments that make Budapest the "Pearl of the Danube."

Whether its strolling across one of the four stately bridges that link Buda and Pest together, gazing dreamily at the Danube from the Fisherman's Bastion or sharing a bottle of Hungarian wine with someone special on Margaret's Island you will be bewitched. The city is truly a marvel that sadly many miss out on.

Don't wait, go to Budapest and fall in love like I did. You'll find that many other cities pale in comparison to it's magic and I dare sat you might start referring to Paris as "The Budapest of the Seine."

PS: If ever in Budapest I HIGHLY recommend the restaurant Poszonyi and while there try the jokai bableves soup. It is a little local hole-in-the-wall, but the food was incredible.

And on another foodie note, Budapest has an extremely famous coffee culture. I highly recommend exploring these scrumptious coffee options! If not only for the taste then for the designs that are so lovely it makes it almost a crime to consume them!

Otherworldly Wilderness

You know when Matt told me that there was this amazing town in the Sloven mountains named Bled, I wasn't sure what to think. When I am traveling I try to stay away from places with names that seem to allude to gore or possible injury. Since I can be a bit of a klutz, I don't like to tempt fate too much especially when mountains are involved.

Nevertheless, Matt convinced me to make the trip out to see Bled. And I am glad he did.

Nestled in the Julian Alps, Bled is a tiny town surrounded by sweeping and romantic scenery. Forest covered mountains rise out of the mystical Lake Bled, whose waters are thought to contain healing powers. Within the lake is their is a small island which is the only natural island in Slovenia. Looking down upon this magnificent scene is the imposing Bled Castle.

Even with the snowy haze we encountered while there, you could not help but notice how unspoiled the place is. Even Tito, the leader of Yugoslav when it existed, loved it here so much that he had grand villa built on the waterfront for his own private use(gotta love those Commie leaders...they really believed in the workers plight eh?)

The best way I can describe bled is that it is truly an otherworldly wilderness. If you are ever in Slovenia or doing a grand tour of the former Yugoslavia, take some time out and come visit this mountain village.

PS: Remember, wear your hiking boots. Although my incredible knee high flat boots are great for almost all occasions, they do not mix with mountains and snow!

Lovely Ljubljana

I cannot help but feel like every time I head east, I somehow wandered into a fairytale. The capital city of this former Yugoslav state was no exception. Ljubljana, Slovenia was an absolutely picturesque small city.

I could not get over how much the city seemed to sparkle at night. Isn't it divine?

Ljubljana has all of the trappings for an absolutely delightful place: a gorgeous Old Town complete with colorful Austro-Hungarian architecture, a small river with unique bridges that make river walks an adventure and an imposing castle perched on a hilltop. Also if you are of Matt's persuasion, it has just the right amount of former communist flair...and by that I mean big gray cement blocks. Not very pretty if you ask me, but to each his or her own.

One monument that should not be missed is the statue to Sloven Romantic poet and national hero, France Prešeren. Situated in the appropriately named Prešeren Square, you see France Prešeren surveying the landscape of the country he loved so much.

However, what is particularly noteworthy is that across the square is a relief of Julija Primic, his muse and unrequited love. As it was in life, there is both a great distance and an immense closeness between the two.

Ljubljana is truly lovely. If you want to go to somewhere with beautiful sights, kind people, incredible food and even better wine then it is a must.

PS:

The castle has some AWESOME nooks and crannies :)

Living Fairytale

People say that it is a fact that fairytales have give people unrealistic expectations about love and life; this is a debatable assertion (but I can't lie the story of Cinderella helped foster my shoe fetish from an early age.) What is a fact is that once you travel to Prague it will give you unrealistic expectations about cities. Because when you walk through the small city you feel like you have truly entered an enchanted realm. I was half expecting for talking animals to bust out of the astrological clock and start singing to me as I frolicked around the city.

*Now cue the sweeping Disney tunes*

The city is breathtaking. However, Prague's beauty is not only it's blessing but it is also it's curse. It is almost too beautiful, too perfect looking. It makes a part of you reject ever wanting to live there because you innately know you just don't belong.

Nevertheless, the enchanted atmosphere of Prague allows one from time to time pretend that all of those unrealistic expectations do exist.
